After the Jump

Founded last year in support of underfunded city school music programs, After the Jump has planned and staged concerts in association with the massive South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas and the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City as well as our own all day and night festival last summer in Brooklyn. This summer, on June 21st, After the Jump will be partnering with Make Music NY to throw our second annual festival, taking over the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Galapagos Art Space, and the North 6th Street itself with four stages and over 40 bands.

After The Jump Fest Summer '08

In a few short months, it will be summer and that means the second annual After the Jump Fest! Bigger, better with even more acts and surprise guests, this year the festival takes place along side the city wide music event, Make Music New York (which itself is a part of the worldwide music phenomenon that takes place in 300 cities in 108 countries) on the first day of summer, June 21st.

After the Jump Fest is the effort of 20 New York City music bloggers whose goal is to help new artists gain exposure while raising money for struggling school music programs. This year, After the Jump is teaming up with The Music Hall of Williamsburg and Galapagos Art Space for a festival stretching from noon until last call. In the next few months, After the Jump blogs will be making more announcements about the festival including new artists and pre-parties. Stay tuned and in the mean time, check out AftertheJumpFest.com for information on our past events and mark your calendars! It’s going to be a doozy.

Pop Tarts Suck Toasted & A.W.E. Present…

Announcements

After the Jump’s Staten Island representative, Pat of Pop Tarts Suck Toasted has a new monthly music series that aims to bring the Williamsburg scene to Staten Island and Staten Island to Williamsburg. In his own words, “We’re looking to expand the scene in Staten Island and bring some of our beloved Staten Island bands to slightly bigger audience in Brooklyn.” Awesome.

Pat has teamed up with Ben Johnson, music editor for the AWE section of the Staten Island Advance, present the series and After the Jump is proud to be sponsoring the shows as part of our Blog Party Initiative. The whole thing kicks off this Saturday at Galapagos on N6th in Williamsburg. Details on the flyer below.

The SXSW After the Jump Backyard, Saturday BBQ Wrap-up

Announcements

After the intensity of 6th St, ending a week of non-stop running around sharing a beer and some bbq outdoors with friends felt just right. The final day of our two day mini fest at the After the Jump Backyard ended with Bell, Laura Gibson, Luke Temple, The Lisps, White Ghost Shivers and Jukebox the Ghost putting on some spectacular performances. Thank you to all involved, thank you to Rico’s dad for making us a much needed veggie burger and a special thank you to César of The Lisps for putting up with all our phone calls and emails. We love you.

ATJ Official SXSW Showcase Wrap-up

Announcements

While every show After the Jump presented at SXSW was beyond amazing, this show was the one we were the most excited and nervous for. As an organization under a year old, being able to present an official showcase was a huge honor and we can’t thank enough Brad First at SXSW for making it possible. He helped us patiently through all our newbie questions and panics and always made sure to supply us with every single piece of information we may need. He is our SXSW hero and we didn’t even get to meet in person.

Turns out, we didn’t have to be so nervous. From the beginning, this show was packed and all the artists put on some of the best performances we have ever seen. The Teenage Prayers, Neimo and Care Bears on Fire got the crowd all riled up for Tigercity who turned the entire place into a dance party that lasted through Cassettes Won’t Listen until 2am when Project Jenny, Project Jan left the stage. It was outrageous. Thank you everyone for making our first time so memorable ;)

The After the Jump Backyard, Friday Night Wrap-up

Announcements

When César of The Lisps came to us with the idea of throwing an outdoor house party during SXSW, we thought it was brilliant. With his band curating, and ATJ producing, it turned into the highlight of the festival for many who attended- and boy did a lot of people attend. Before These United States could hit the stage, we were shut down by the police. But damn the man, the law couldn’t bring down this party and we continued on into the wee hours of the night… all be it acoustically.

It was magical catching up with some of our favourite bands like Senryu and The Physics of Meaning and being introduced to new favourites, like These United States and the hilarious Laura Palmer. Thanks to photog Kramer for being are designated driver and to Senryu for always keeping our glasses full. And from the bottom of our hearts, we send a big hug out to Rico, who let us use his home, his backyard and his dad to grill. We love you! Thank you too to BlogFresh Radio, whom was on scene to interview a few of us for their live SXSW coverage (listen to it here), ASCAP for sending us all sort of goodies to give away, and Trak Image and Buzzfeed for making it possible to feed the hungry masses and rent them port-o-potties.

SXSW ATJ/Indie Outlaw/Paper Garden Records Party Wrap-up

Announcements

Show one of three for After the Jump on the last day of SXSW at Lucky Lounge had one of our all time favourite new artists, Cloud Cult, headlining. The day they confirmed their participation, we danced with joy. No fighting the hoards at The Bowery Ballroom to see them for us, we got to get up close and personal with the gorgeous Minnesota group. It’s just too bad we couldn’t afford to buy the painting at the end, we had our hearts set on it, but alas, it probably would have never fit in the overhead compartment on our flight home. We’d also like to mention our excitement at hosting the very first American show for The Answering Machine! We have no doubt they’ll be back over here soon, making us proud.

A big thank you must be said to Speakerheart for sponsoring this event and being onsite to share some laughs with and give out beautiful t-shirts made especially for the show. Speakerheart has also created a special After the Jump site where you can download a compilation of all the artists who performed that day. Check it out! Also head over to their Typepad where they have some pictures.

Thank you also to Trak Image, Red Stripe, Tofurky, BlogFresh Radio, WOXY, ASCAP and BuzzFeed for making this possible. We can now say we’ve had N*SYNC attend one of our shows (for real!), there is no gratitude deep enough for that.

Below are some pictures from the show all taken by our official photographer, Katie Kramer and Derek Slaton for Punkphoto.
